Application reference: 2008/1818/01/DET
O2 submitted a planning application to Newcastle City Council to erect a 25 metre telecommunications mast on the Quicksilver Removals site in Throckley. Local residents sent numerous objections to the proposal on the grounds that it would be an eyesore and potentially hazardous to health. (To view photographs suggesting this impact please go to Photographs tab). The proposed site would overlook houses, youth facilities, the local bowling green as well as Throckley Primary School and, if approved, could open the door to other applications being submitted locally.
At 25 metres, this mast would tower above Throckley and although the health
hazards from such a mast are officially ‘unproven’ they are uppermost in a lot
of peoples’ minds. The health implications might only surface in years to come
when it is too late!
TRAG and other concerned residents held discussions with the local Planning
Officer and Cllr. Linda Wright called a public meeting, at the Co-op Hall on the
19th November 2008 to gauge local opinion. All of those in attendance were
opposed to this application and Linda Wright confirmed that she and Cllr Mike
Lynch lodged their objection, as had M.P. Doug Henderson.
TRAG members Pauline and Gina distributed information leaflets, (to view flyers
please go to Correspondence tab), organised local petitions and canvassed
parents outside of the school gates and Linda Wright organised a public meeting
at the Coop Hall.
TRAG urged residents to make their feelings known to Newcastle City Council’s
Planning Department by letter (a draft letter containing all objections raised
by residents is on file). If residents were against the proposal because of the
way it looked, then this reason must be stated, along with any other objections
to the proposal.
Given the significant level of local opposition to the proposed site of the
radio mast in Throckley, O2 withdrew the planning application for the proposed
25m tower at Quicksilver the Mover. Well done to everyone involved!
