About TRAG
Throckley Residents Action Group was formed by local residents in February 2008 in response to the planning application for the redevelopment of Henderson Water Treatment Works. Since that time TRAG has been working hard with some success, on a number of issues. Along the way we have contacted and been supported by many people including local councillors and MPs and we have learned a lot about the process of influencing Newcastle City Council. In the many letters we have sent out we have made it clear to everyone concerned that we won't give up in our fight to protect Throckley village and enhance the quality of life of the residents. TRAG would gladly welcome and support any resident who would wish to join the group.
In terms of the development of Henderson Water Treatment Works, Prospect House and the Hexham Road Garage site, whilst the current economic crisis and the impact this is having on house building and house sales may mean that there will be a lull in housing developments for the next year or two, the threat to Throckley village is still there. Local authorities are being encouraged by the Government to work with developers on community owned housing.
Our aim is to continue to keep TRAG organised and aware, so as to be in a position to inform residents and possibly challenge any further proposals or planning application submissions that threaten our village and surrounding area. We know residents are not against all new developments in Throckley but we need to ensure that TRAG represents the views of local residents and that these views are taken into consideration by both developers and the City Council alike when making planning decisions. TRAG members would like to thank all local residents for their past and future support if we are to continue to have any chance of success and are to make a real difference.
TRAG acts as a voice for the community
Hundreds of people voiced their support in our ‘saving Throckley village from inappropriate development’ campaign. With residents’ future support we will continue to act as one of the voices for the community, campaigning for action on issues that affect the people of Throckley, and to improve the quality of life in the area in which we live. We welcome your views and all the help we can get. We know that the majority of residents do not want over development, not just because they want to protect the village, but also because they are already alarmed by the increasing volume of traffic on our road system, the lack of off road parking and also the increasing pressure on the infrastructure e.g. water supply, sewage, road and general drainage systems, which were in general installed nearly a century ago!
